Welcome to the Smoke Detectives®
fire safety web site!
The Smoke Detectives fire safety education
program has been provided free to educators and fire departments
since 1991. You may have used this program in your classroom
or worked with local firefighters as they demonstrate fire
safety.
The program has helped save lives by giving
children the tools and information they need to remember and
follow simple safety procedures, such as how to call 9-1-1and
how to exit a burning building safely.
With this web site, we are providing you the
same vital messages in an engaging format that will be even
more accessible for classroom use, and easy for your students
to use at home with their parents.
The site has been developed specifically for
children between the ages of 5 and 11 (Kindergarten through
fifth grade). You will find printable lessons and copymasters
in the Teachers section that have been created for younger
students (K-2) and for older students (3rd through 5th grade).
Most of the lessons are easily adapted to fit the skill and
interest levels of your students. They have been developed
to integrate into core subjects, making fire safety relevant
in the classroom setting.
Some of the written material in the site may
be a challenge for younger children. This can provide you
with an opportunity to teach and reinforce reading comprehension
skills as you help your students "grow into" use
of the site. You may want to have students work in teams to
play the fire safety games in an exercise that can be a good
group cooperative learning experience.
Here are some strategies for effectively
using the Smoke Detectives web site with your students:
· Explore Anytown and "meet"
the Smoke Detectives characters who introduce and reinforce
fire safety messages.
· Play the games yourself so you can
later play and discuss them with students, or even assign
them as "homework."
· Familiarize yourself with the information
provided in the Command Center.
· Read through the lessons in the Teachers
section to determine how you can
best use the materials to achieve your teaching objectives.
· Maximize the impact of your lessons
by coordinating a classroom/in-home
learning experience. Look through the suggested activities
provided in the
Parent section. Let parents know what you are teaching and
suggest how they
can reinforce those lessons using the Parent activities provided.
