Suggested Procedure
Lesson
Objective:
Students learn to recognize signs that inform and warn as
they begin to learn letters and words.
Primary
Subjects/Skills:
English Language Arts, Art, Critical Thinking
Suggested
Procedure:
Take photos of signs to bring in to class, such as EXIT, One
Way, Do Not Enter, Danger, Slow, symbols for bathrooms, OPEN
and CLOSED signs they might see in a store, etc.
Discuss the concept of signs. Do they know what signs are
for? Signs give you information and instructions. Show some
samples that you brought in and ask for other examples.
Talk about why signs are good. They let you know you should
be careful. They direct you where to go. They give you information
(the store will be closed until 1 p.m.). Ask students what
might happen if there were no signs. No Stop signs. No street
lights. No signs telling you where bathrooms are located.
Talk about simple safety or warning signs students could create
that could help people avoid dangers and stay safe. Help them
write out simple warning words and make signs they can put
around school or at home.

Discuss the use of icons or symbols used on signs, such as
the red circle with the red slash through it. They can create
a sign of a stick figure walking with a line through it to
mean

Ask students to observe and report on the warning signs they
notice on the way to school.
