Preparation:
Discuss and practice Stop, Drop & Roll; have students
look at the demonstration in the Command Center.
Suggested
Procedure:
Write the vocabulary words “Oxygen” and “Air”
on the blackboard and discuss their meanings. Explain that
air is something that can help fires keep growing.
Ask Students:
1. What do you do when you are frightened? (Answers will vary.)
2. What if your clothing caught fire? Would you run? Why or
why not? (Guide students to understand that they should not
run.)
3. Why should you not run?
(List responses on chalkboard.)
Concept Development:
1. Fire cannot keep burning if there is no air.
2. Oxygen is part of air.
3. Air and oxygen help a fire grow.
4. When you run, you cause wind or air. This wind or air will
help the fire grow.
5. To stop the fire, you want to take the oxygen or fire away.
Ask your students, “How can you take the air away?”
(Answers will vary.)
6. You can take the oxygen or air away by rolling on the ground
or floor.
7. You can use something to cover the fire, such as a coat,
blanket, towel or tablecloth. List these on the board.

Roll in Safe Scenes for students to color.
• Older students can begin to learn to write the sentence
