Vessel Safety Check (VSC)

vessel safety check logoState Farm is proud to sponsor the U.S. Coast Guard Vessel Safety Check Program administered by volunteers from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Power Squadrons®.

A VSC is a free boat safety check service for America's recreational boaters, and it only takes about 30 minutes to complete. It's a way for you to learn about avoiding conditions that might put you in violation of state or federal laws or create danger for you or your passengers on the water.

Here's how it works: a vessel examiner meets you at your boat during a prearranged time or during a VSC event at a marina or boat ramp. The examiner will check for over 15 items required by state and federal regulations, such as:

  • Proper display of numbers
  • Registration/documentation
  • Personal floatation devices
  • Visual distress signals
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Proper ventilation
  • Backfire flame control
  • Emergency sound producing devices
  • Navigation lights

No penalties are assessed, but the examiner does make recommendations and discusses safety issues.

If your boat successfully meets all the requirements, a decal will be presented for you to display on your boat.
